The story of terror camp

In 2020, AMC's first season ofThe Terror found a new audience of enthusiastic fans who resonated with its themes of isolation, mystery, and loyalty through adversity during such a difficult and uncertain time.

As this loyal fanbase grew, fans began to delve deeper and deeper into the show. From their homes, fans researched the biographies of Franklin's men and the history behind the expedition, analyzed the costumes, references, and imagery in the show, and discussed intensely The Terror's themes of class, race, gender, and intimacy.

It was in this atmosphere of intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm that Terror Camp was founded, as a way for fans to share their research, meet other like-minded fans, and celebrate the cast and crew of such a fantastic and inspiring series.

Because of the pandemic, an in-person conference was impossible, but everyone had access to Zoom—even showrunner David Kajganich, who was our keynote speaker that first year and has been a vital supporter of Terror Camp's mission of inclusivity and education ever since.

With subsequent conferences expanding beyond The Terror and the Franklin expedition to cover the wide and fascinating landscape of polar history and humanities, Terror Camp has become a highlight of the year for polar enthusiasts around the world.

Academics, professionals, amateurs, and fans alike are all welcome at Terror Camp. No qualifications other than a love of polar history are required to present or attend.

But beware—more than a few attendees of past conferences have ended up enrolling in history degrees thanks to the inspiration that Terror Camp has stirred up in them! â€‹
